A Surprise Luxury Picnic Proposal on an Amsterdam Canal

From the moment Philip reached out to me about photographing his surprise proposal to Emily, I knew we were in for something extra special! His vision was to arrange a luxury picnic setup on one of Amsterdam’s beautiful canals, and propose right there on the water. Then we planned on engagement photos followed by champagne and a private, romantic dinner as the sun set. And wow, did it turn out perfectly!
How the couple described their relationship to me:
Joyful • full of laughter • high school sweethearts
(I love to use these descriptions to understand how my couples naturally interact with each other, and inform what kinds of things I might ask them to do during our shoot!)
Photo Shoot Route:
The luxury picnic proposal spot was set up on the Brouwersgracht canal in central Amsterdam, so that’s where we started and ended! I planned a short walking route in the area to make sure we could get a mix of location vibes in this couple’s engagement photos without straying too far from the picnic.

A Man, A Plan, A Canal: Luxury Picnic Proposal Edition
When Philip first reached out to me, he told me he wanted to surprise his girlfriend by proposing at a luxury picnic on an Amsterdam canal, and of course he wanted a proposal photographer there to capture the whole thing!
He chose to work with a local company called Bocaditos to make his picnic vision happen, and I was of course thrilled to be the photographer for this moment. And since Philip and Emily were traveling with a group of friends, he got them in on the secret and planning too.
A Wrench in the Proposal Plan
When the proposal day came, the logistics got a little more complicated: this couple was on a tight travel schedule, and their flight to Amsterdam had been very delayed. But luckily, he, the Bocaditos team, and I had all exchanged phone numbers, and we were able to coordinate and push back our start time! But sunset waits for no one, so there was still some time pressure.
As soon as they got out of the airport, Philip and Emily hopped in a car and rushed the Brouwersgracht canal with their suitcases in tow. (Emily thought they were running late to a normal dinner reservation!) Their friends followed along behind them in secret, ready to congratulate them and then whisk away their suitcases the moment Emily said yes. Meanwhile, the Bocaditos team set the scene, and I hid myself nearby with my camera at the ready.
The Proposal and Amsterdam Sunset Engagement photos
When the couple arrived, Emily was momentarily confused about where they were going. But realization set in pretty fast when Philip lead her down to the water and she saw the picnic. He got down on one knee, with the picnic and all of Amsterdam behind him. And of course she said yes!!
After letting them share the moment of their proposal together, I introduced myself properly. Then we started off on a short walk around the area for an Amsterdam engagement photo shoot before they settled in to their picnic. We didn’t get very far, though, before the couple’s friends popped up to congratulate them and give them hugs!
For our more classic “engagement photo session” part of the photo shoot, I led them on a short walking route around the Brouwersgracht area, which is one of my absolute favorites. There are so many beautiful spots with canals, traditional canal houses, bridges, and quaint Amsterdam streets. We finished up back where we started, and the couple got settled into their picnic and popped their celebratory champagne before we said goodbye!
Photo Shoot Outfits: Classy, Coordinated Neutral Tones
Emily may not have known there was a photo shoot in store, but you would never guess that from seeing how perfectly coordinated this couple’s outfits were! They both showed up wearing khaki pants and jackets to match. Philip paired his with a white button down and shoes, and Emily went for black boots, a dark brown top, and a Burberry scarf to pull it all together.
My Favorite Moments and Details from This Proposal Photo Shoot:
I loved everything about this evening, from the thoughtful planning, to the beautiful picnic and location, to the besties coming to help and surprise their friends, to this incredible couple! It really was such a perfect and beautiful evening, despite the delayed flight’s best efforts.
I also especially loved the last few minutes of our photo shoot: For most of the session, we focused on more classic romantic proposal and engagement photos, but this couple wanted to show off their personalities, too! They had so much fun popping the champagne and leaning into the celebration, and those are some of my favorite photos from this proposal.
