A Romantic Afternoon Photo Session at the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam’s de Pijp Neighborhood

Two people sitting on stairs outside a brick building in de Pijp, talking and smiling while sharing homemade coffee. A meaningful moment captured by an Amsterdam photographer.

From Rainy Photos at Rijksmuseum to Sunny, Cozy ones in de Pijp

This couple’s photo session started as a wintery, rainy afternoon at the Rijksmuseum and de Pijp, but by we ended up getting some sun by the end! And then went for cozy hot drinks by the end of the photo shoot as well, because why not have a cuddly romantic winter moment either way?

Photos in the Rain at the Rijksmuseum

For our photo shoot near the Rijksmuseum and de Pijp, I met Estella and Panos in the pouring rain—and immediately handed them my umbrella! We headed straight for the protected walkway near the museum to get away from the rain, and started our couple’s photography session there.

This couple wanted to capture a little bit of the hustle and bustle of a Rijksmuseum afternoon, so we mixed peaceful photos of the two of them with some more “real life” images showing the chaos of people walking and biking in and out! Soon enough, though, we decided to get away from the crowds and a little further from the beaten path.

We took a few photos in a little garden near the museum (which I absolutely loved!) and then walked to the de Pijp neighborhood of Amsterdam, to do the remainder of our photography session there. Not long after, the sun decided to peek out for us—we felt so lucky!

A Couple’s Tradition, A Walk, and hot drinks in de Pijp

Panos and Estella love spending their mornings together with homemade coffee, so we decided to incorporate that into our photography session as well. They brought their favorite thermos and mugs with them, and we found a moment for them to sit and pour coffee for each other, and then walk with it for a while!

And then, of course, we ended up at a cozy cafe for hot drinks part 2: hot chocolate and tea! This cafe is not only cute, it also has a heated outdoor area, which was perfect for warming up and getting wintery photos semi-outdoors. I always love finishing photo shoots at a cafe, and especially on cold or rainy days, it’s nice to have a cozy, cuddly, warming end to a chilly city photo session.

Winter Photo Shoot Outfits: Neutral Tones with a Pop

This couple opted for put-together yet casual outfits in complementary neutral tones. They looked great and like they went together, but without being matchy-matchy!

Estella wore a cozy grey turtleneck sweater, plaid miniskirt and black tights, finished off with a camel raincoat and bag, an equally cozy scarf, and a pair of brown leather boots. Her partner Panos wore a camel sweater over a white collared shirt, paired with jeans and white sneakers. He wore a chic striped wool scarf on top of that with a black peacoat to stay warm!

And of course, until it stopped raining, they had an umbrella with them, too. This one is my favorite rainy-day umbrella for photo shoots—it lets the light through beautifully, and it doesn’t break in the wind!

My Favorite Moments and Details from our Session:

This couple was soooo much fun to work with! I loved getting to explore the areas around the Rijksmuseum and de Pijp together. My favorite touch was that they chose to incorporate their morning coffee tradition into their photo shoot, and that they brought the very mugs they always use! It was such a nice way to capture a bit of who they are in the everyday, against a not-quite-everyday backdrop.
